Before making its debut at the Venice Film Festival, Netflix has acquired the domestic rights to Maria. Pablo Larraín’s biopic stars Angelina Jolie (By the Sea) as the opera singer Maria Callas. Larraín always takes a more elegant, less blunt approach with biopics, including Jackie and Spencer. With Maria, don’t only expect an Awards contender from Netflix here, but (hopefully) a deeply introspective, cinematic biopic.
The film focuses specifically on Calla’s life in the 1970s. “I’m excited to partner again with the Netflix team who care so passionately about movies. This film is my most personal work yet” said Larraín in a statement. “It is a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences worldwide like Maria did with her life.”
Netflix previously released Larraín’s El Conde. The director’s latest film is penned by none other than the great Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders and director of Locke. With Larraín, Jolie, and Knight involved, we have high hopes for Maria.
