the fall
Lee Pace and Catinca Untaru in The Fall

The Fall bankrupted filmmaker Tarsem Singh. He would do it again and again, he’s said. Who can blame him for standing proudly by his masterpiece? The emotional and visual wonder is a self-financed dream, a staggering work of art that more people should’ve experienced in theaters. For anyone who missed out, The Fall is returning to cinemas, thanks to Mubi.

According to Deadline, a newly restored 4K version debuts at the Locarno Film Festival and then goes to theaters on September 27th in North America and overseas. Then Mubi will stream the film, which is strangely difficult to rent and buy on home video. Years ago, Criterion declined Tarsem’s offer to release the film, which features costumes from the legendary Eiko Ishioka.

The director’s next picture, Dear Jassi, will hopefully come out this year around the now much-anticipated re-release of The Fall.
