Two of FX’s most acclaimed shows, The Bear and Shōgun, dominated this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards with historic wins.
“There was a lot of preparation, especially when we got Olivia Colman and Claire Foy confirmed for the episode with Imelda Staunton. We always knew about the last scene, having three queens altogether would be iconic.”
“Some things were kind of surprisingly homey, and I thought, if I replicate this, it’s going to look like we can’t afford to do this stuff.”
“At the end when you understand that Princess Margaret says goodbye to Queen Elizabeth, which I feel that in the whole film and how it’s been built up, that it works, that you really feel that The Queen is actually walking in on her own and now she’s on her own.”
“We were very keen not to do impersonations or lookalikes in terms of approaching these characters.”
“It was a real pleasure to be able to do The Queen justice, because the show is ultimately about her.”
“The challenge really was in showing Diana on holiday without her kind of trademark hairstyle. It’s still saying Diana, so we would agonize over this wig when it had had salt water in it and she’d been diving. We just didn’t have the usual public silhouette that we could rely on.”
Top Boy won Best Dramatic Series at the BAFTA TV Awards, while the final season of The Crown was surprisingly snubbed.
