It’s an indie film at its core. A film that no studio exec at any major studio would greenlight. Baker spent his career in the trenches of low-budget films with an unwavering vision to present films that spotlight marginalized people while never pandering or preaching. At once, it is a modern film with adult themes and subject matter juxtaposed with Lubitschian comedy that hearkens back to the early days of Hollywood.
I think that some of the things that were our greatest challenges became our greatest strengths. I knew that the challenge was gonna be to match the scale of the film with a really small team and on an indie budget. In the costume department, it was really beautiful because you’re in the trenches together and you sort of reach out to your community.
The Producers Guild of America (PGA) hosted the 36th Annual Producers Guild Awards at The Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City. The star-studded evening recognized influential producers and entertainment icons with special honors including Chris Meledandri with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures; Taika Waititi with the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television; Dana Walden with the Milestone Award; and the late Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein with the Trailblazer Award.
The winners of the Directors Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in 2024 were announced tonight during the 77th Annual DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. SEAN BAKER won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film for Anora.
Sean Baker has quietly built an impressive resume of truly independent films that speak to the 99% in a way that most modern films don’t. The 97th Oscar nominations were announced today. Academy members from each of the 19 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film, International Feature Film and Live Action Short Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of members from all branches who opt in to participate. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

That’s one of those happy accidents where that squeak comes from that moment on set and there’s a natural progression to how that windshield chill wiper sounded based on the amount of snowfall that was hitting the windshield. So when the windshield was initially dry, it was grating, and then as the snowfall continued, it slowly changed over time until it became basically like a whisper.
I feel like the strip club and the Vegas segments have a different color scheme and are quite different with their purples and the blues as well. I felt like those vibrant hues were nice to showcase the fantasy version of reality, whereas then all the colder stuff is kind of stark real New York.
The American Film Institute (AFI) announced last week the AFI AWARDS 2024 honorees. The recipients include 10 outstanding motion pictures and 10 outstanding television programs deemed culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image. An additional honoree was selected for an AFI Special Award, designated for works of excellence that fall outside of AFI AWARDS’ eligibility criteria.
