South by Southwest is expanding. The festival, which brings together film, music, tech, and a whole lot more, will kickoff its first stint in east London from June 2nd to the 7th. SXSW got its start in Austin, Texas, before venturing out to Australia and now the United Kingdom.
For film fans, it’s a great place to experience fresh new voices, especially in the genre space. Midnight screenings are more often than not a treat. While the fest runs around two weeks in Austin, it’s a more a short and sweet schedule in London. “A shorter date format relative to SXSW in Austin will allow SXSW London to run its conference, music, screen and arts programmes at the same time, ensuring accessibility to multiple programming formats and diverse networking opportunities for attendees from different industries,” said Randel Bryan, SXSW London’s Managing Director. “Bringing SXSW to the streets of Shoreditch will allow us to create a festival like no other, one that unfolds across incredible indoor spaces whilst also showcasing creativity and artistic experiences in unique public spaces, allowing us to capture the energy and excitement of the summer.”
20,000 attendees are expected, including plenty of filmmakers, crew members, and producers. If SXSW London is as successful as Austin’s fest, it’ll provide another fun home for up and coming storytellers to connect. Great collaborations can be born at SXSW.
