Following the Zen Diaries of Gary Schandling and George Carlin’s American Dream, Judd Apatow will now tell the story of another comedy genius, Mel Brooks. “I went into comedy because of my love for Mel Brooks. This project is the dream of a lifetime,” said Apatow in a statement. HBO Documentary Films and Apatow Productions are behind the Mel Brooks documentary, which Apatow will co-direct with Michael Bonfiglio.
Brooks doesn’t need any introduction, but here’s one anyway: he directed Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, and History of the World, Part I. He’s also directed a few underrated gems such as High Anxiety and Dracula: Dead and Loving It. HBO calls the doc an “expansive yet intimate look at one of comedy’s most hilarious and influential minds, whose work has had audiences around the world laughing for more than 70 years.” Stay tuned for more news on the Mel Brooks documentary.
For any Mel Brooks fans in Hollywood, aka reasonable people, he’s doing a live discussion for the 50th anniversary of Blazing Saddles on Saturday, June 27th.
