Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger in The Shrouds

David Cronenberg is an artist of death. The filmmaker behind body and mind horror classics, including Crash and The Fly, has shown the fragility of life time and time again throughout his career. Often to glorious, gooey results, including his very entertaining last feature, Crimes of the Future. Cronenberg is back to face and question death again in his newest film, The Shrouds, which is debuting at the Cannes Film Festival.

The picture reunites the filmmaker with Vincent Cassel, who previously starred in Eastern Promises and appeared in A Dangerous Method. Diane Kruger, Léa Seydoux, and Guy Pearce star alongside Cassel in The Shrouds.

Here’s the first teaser for The Shrouds:

The less known about an upcoming Cronenberg film, the better. However, the director did reveal to Variety how deeply personal The Shrouds is to him. “Most burial rituals are about avoiding the reality of death and the reality of what happens to a body. I would say that in our movie this is a reversal of the normal function of a shroud. Here, it is to reveal rather than to conceal,” Cronenberg told Variety. “I was writing this film while experiencing the grief of the loss of my wife, who died seven years ago. It was an exploration for me because it was not just a technical exercise, it was an emotional exercise.”
